Frequently Asked Questions About Supervised Visitation
What are the rules for supervised visitation in BC?
In British Columbia, supervised visitation is guided by court orders, child protection standards, and best-practice frameworks focused on child safety and neutrality. Rules for supervised visitation typically outline who may attend visits, how visits are structured, what behaviour is expected, and what actions are not permitted.
At Eclipse, supervised visits are overseen by trained supervisors who remain neutral, follow clear documentation procedures, and prioritize the child’s emotional and physical well-being at all times. Specific requirements may vary depending on whether visits are court-ordered, referred through MCFD, or arranged privately.
What are supervised visitation guidelines?
Supervised visitation guidelines are the expectations and boundaries that help visits run safely and respectfully. These guidelines usually include:
-
Arriving on time and prepared for visits
-
Following supervisor direction at all times
-
Avoiding conflict, coaching, or inappropriate conversation
-
Maintaining a child-focused approach during visits
-
Respecting safety protocols and supervision boundaries
These guidelines are in place to create consistency, reduce stress for children, and ensure supervised visitation remains a supportive and structured experience.
What happens if supervised visitation guidelines are violated?
If supervised visitation guidelines are violated, the supervisor documents the incident and responds based on safety and policy requirements. Minor issues may result in reminders or adjustments, while more serious supervised visitation violations may lead to visit termination, reporting to referral sources, or involvement of legal or child protection authorities.
Our priority is always child safety. Any concerns are handled professionally, neutrally, and in accordance with established supervised visitation guidelines and reporting standards.
How long does supervised visitation last?
The length of supervised visitation varies depending on individual circumstances. Some arrangements are short-term and reviewed regularly, while others may continue longer based on court decisions, safety considerations, or family needs.
Supervised visitation is often reviewed by courts, legal professionals, or referring agencies, with changes made when it is deemed safe and appropriate to do so.
Do I need a court order for supervised visitation?
A court order is not always required. Supervised visitation may be arranged through:
-
Court orders
-
MCFD or community agency referrals
-
Lawyer referrals
-
Self-referrals or mutual agreement between parties
We work with families across Vancouver who come to supervised visitation through many different pathways and help clarify next steps based on their situation.
What’s the difference between supervised visitation and supervised exchanges?
Supervised visits involve a supervisor remaining present for the entire visit between a child and parent. These visits are observed and documented to ensure safety and adherence to guidelines.
Supervised exchanges, on the other hand, focus only on the transfer of the child between caregivers. The supervisor ensures the exchange happens safely and calmly, but does not remain present for the visit itself.
Both services are designed to reduce conflict and protect children, and we help determine which option is most appropriate based on each family’s needs.
